Reverend John Walter Harty was a graduate of Nyack College, now known as Alliance University. The college has produced many notable alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields. Reverend Harty’s connection to Nyack College places him among a distinguished group of graduates who have gone on to serve in ministry and other impactful roles.
Reverend John Walter Harty was a dedicated and influential figure in the Christian community. He founded Harty Bible School, which has played a significant role in educating future leaders in ministry and preparing them for Christian ministry and evangelism and equipping them to grow spiritually and academically.
His dedication to teaching and his commitment to Bible study clearly had a profound impact. It is a testament to that dedication that a group of church members who would meet for Wednesday Bible study, evolved into the Harty Bible School.
In 1949, the Harty Bible School opened its doors, marking the beginning of a journey dedicated to faith, Bible education, and community. However, the successes of the school were not the result of one man’s efforts alone. It was the collective dedication and hard work of many early teachers, staff, and volunteers that brought Reverend Harty’s vision to life.
The early years of Harty Bible School were marked by the tireless efforts of its teachers. The teachers were more than just educators; they were mentors and role models. They brought the scriptures to life, instilling in students a deep understanding and appreciation of the Bible. Their innovative teaching methods and dedication to student success set a high standard for future generations.
Groundbreaking of the John Walter Harty Memorial Building at Christian Tabernacle Church

I was one of the young people of Christian Tabernacle who joined the excitement of the groundbreaking for the new education building. The church did not fundraise, but the congregation gave their monies as unto the Lord to make it possible to begin construction on the new building. The excitement and anticipation I felt as the contractors worked was awesome. I will always remember the service that was held in the sanctuary of the church at the day of groundbreaking, reinforcing the strong sense of faith and unity that embodies Harty Bible School.–Dr. Ken Barbour
